Retired Major James Norton Ebner, 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. He was born on October 4, 1940, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Laurence Wendell Ebner and Helen L. Shea.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of Major after a distinguished military career. A proud Vietnam veteran, he was trained in numerous leadership duties which include Air Defense Officer, Artillery Officer, and Guided Missile Systems Officer. Among his commendations were the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation. His family takes great pride in his dedicated service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to his country. In 1979, he moved to Hampton, Virginia, where he was stationed at Fort Monroe. Following his military retirement, he continued his service there as a Civil Service employee.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Jacqueline Ebner (née Grant de Luxoliere de Bellussiere); his stepdaughter, Barbara Knighten; and his brother, Lawrence J. Ebner. He is survived by his stepchildren, Murielle Hodgson, Joel Utterback, Judy Utterback, Mike Utterback, and Christine Sweeney; as well as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Jim was an avid reader and a passionate history enthusiast. He found great joy in sailing and listening to classical music. He will be remembered for his kind heart, steady calm, and enduring sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held May 29, 2026 at 11AM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Hampton, VA.
Interment will follow in Albert G, Horton Jr Memorial Veterans Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Disabled American Veterans in his memory.
